The Cochrane Review states “”The incidence of early GBS infection was reduced with IAP compared to no treatment.” This despite the fact that the randomised controlled trials (gold standard trials) used had a combined population of 852 GBS positive women, which is inadequate to show effect definitively for an infection which, according to Cochrane, only develops in “About one in 2000 newborn babies”.

Cochrane only uses RCTs, of which there are very few, not least because as the authors acknowledge “The opportunity to conduct such trials has likely been lost”, Effectiveness if IAP against EOGBS infections has been demonstrated in other trials, though not the RCTs on which Cochrane focuses.
