I am a doula in Abilene, TX and my partner and I are the only ones. There is probably a reason for why all the others have gone....The dr.'s here refuse to sign off on our certification, so we have a midwife that is helping us. My question is, for anyone who has an answer, is there a bill of rights for pregnant women in each state? Could I possibly prepare my clients who want to have a hospital birth better? Any suggestions?

I agree 100%! I am a birth doula myself, and I find it interesting that even though labor support people have been around for ages, our culture almost has a taboo against it. Public awareness and education takes perhaps our greatest effort and will benefit our society in the long term.
Thanks for writing about this issue!

I think that's true in many, many cases. Obstetrics is unlike any other surgical specialty in that the separation of mother and fetus (for lack of a better way of putting it) will occur spontaneously and without problem in the majority of cases. The same does not hold true for, I don't know, removing tumors?

Perhaps there are many OBs who really would have preferred another field in which no family members or doulas would be looking over their shoulder on the job.

I believe the real reason that hospitals and their personnel discourage use of doulas is that they are afraid doulas will interfere with the hospital agenda. Hospital staff do not like patients who ask questions or bring a birth plan; they want robot women who labor silently and remain in one position so they are easy to monitor from the central monitoring station, without the nurse having to make physical contact with the patient.
