Scared of Normal?

Today I was talking with another pregnant woman about her upcoming birth. She said she was scared to give birth vaginally and had chosen a scheduled c-section. I must have looked at her like she had three heads. I explained that I am petrified of a major abdominal surgery. What is it about our culture that makes women fear what is normal and natural? How can staples and sutures in your belly be a better alternative?

Luckily, this did give me a chance to discuss my views on elective cesarean sections and clear up a few of her misconceptions. Then I went on to tell her a few things that my husband and I are doing to avoid an unneccesary surgery.

For example:
*Attending a good childbirth class series.
* Hiring a doula.
* Choosing a practitioner who believes in the power of a woman's body to birth without intervention.

I am so glad that you talked

I am so glad that you talked to her about it. The first time I had this happen to me was at park day with a bunch of friends from church. I honestly was speechless. I could think of nothing to say, nothing. Later some of my friends who know my love of birth said they were surprised I said nothing.

I did go home that day, gathered information, printed off some things and brought them to the park the following weeks to share. She ended up with a vaginal birth.

I like your response. Something to keep in mind if it happens to me again. So I am not speechless.

That makes me so sad!

That makes me so sad! We have really lost touch with the benefits of natural childbirth. Not just the emotional and the spiritual aspects for the mother but the physiological benefits as well: the releasing of bonding/love hormones that make breastfeeding less of a struggle and post partum depression less likely; the "wringing out" of baby's lungs that can help long-term lung health; the passing of healthy bacteria from the mother to the baby to jumpstart the immune system... And as my midwife says, 'I'd rather have the pain STOP when the baby is born, than START when the baby is born.'

I know our culture convinces women to be terrified of childbirth. But still, I think it is criminal for doctors to perform non-emergency c-sections. It is pure hubris to believe that we can invent a way of birthing that is as good as nature's way.
